“Kerosene” first single release for MDSN
This is a big week for our family! Our 16 year old daughter, Madison Grace Binion (affectionately called “Gracie”), is set to release her very first music single with Integrity Music, entitled “Kerosene.” The single is now available for sale under her artist name MDSN (pronounced Madison).
Gracie has been working with Integrity for a year now, cowriting with writers and producers in Nashville, working hard to create the first song that would introduce MDSN to the world. She worked with Rhyan Shirley as a co-writer and Kyle Lee as co-writer and producer. As Gracie’s parents, we have been so moved to see how the entire Integrity Music team has rallied around our daughter’s vision and sound. This is not Christian music (or worship music) as you’ve known it.
Gracie’s passion is to reach beyond the walls of the church to impact those of her generation who typically wouldn’t listen to Christian music, and when you hear “Kerosene” you’ll see how she’s done just that.
Disney comes calling
Since Gracie was 9 years old we knew she had a songwriting gift. After being inspired from a Taylor Swift Thanksgiving special, little Gracie decided she wanted to write a pop song. What she wrote blew our minds and we quickly had our friend produce a track and record her vocal for the song. Through various connections of ours in the industry, Gracie’s song caught the attention of Disney Channel music executive, Steven Vincent. At the age of 12, Gracie was asked to write a theme song for Disney Channel’s new show, Girl Meets World. When Gracie completed the song and we recorded a demo for it, Vincent wanted to meet this 12 year old songwriter. We excitedly flew out to L.A. for a meeting with him; her song was in their Top 3 choices for the show. We knew if Disney Channel chose her song, it would be a game changer for our whole family. Potentially even a move to Los Angeles.
Well, the producers of Girl Meets World ended up going in a different direction for their theme song, and honestly, we were disappointed. I think David and I were more disappointed than Gracie. We had invested a lot of time and money into this dream, and we were wanting a payoff for it. Gracie, though, seemed to be pretty unaffected by their decision. Soon after, at the age of 13, she came to the realization that she wanted to focus on leading worship and writing music for the church. Side note: don’t underestimate the ability of your young child to know what they’re called to do at a young age!
The future comes calling
So, Gracie poured herself into her youth group at church serving on the worship team and finding her place in His church. Fast forward 2 years and she was 15. Adrian Thompson of Integrity Music contacts David and says they’d like to talk to us about potentially signing Gracie as a songwriter and artist. Adrian believed she would be a leading voice for her generation. And now, almost exactly one year later, she is releasing her first single with Integrity.
As a parent, there is a lot I can take away from this journey with our daughter. First, invest in your children’s passions and giftings; make it a priority. You won’t regret it, and it will mean the world to them to know that you hear and see them. Second, just because something doesn’t turn out the way you (or they) thought it would, doesn’t mean God won’t use it for the bigger picture of what He is doing in their life! We thought Gracie was going to be a Disney pop princess, but God had something much bigger in mind to use for His glory!
MDSN’s single “Kerosene” will be available on all digital music outlets. You will also hear it played on Christian Hit Radio and Spotify and Apple Music playlists. Thank you for your support of our family’s music! We pray God’s greatest blessings on you and your children! May our kids do bigger and better things than we ever dreamed of. As my husband says, may our ceiling be their floor. And may Jesus be lifted high in their lives for all the world to see!
